about:lens_template

Below is a template lens description that can be copied and pasted to create your own pattern. For an example of a filled out pattern, see The Lens of Juicy Feedback.

Title of the Lens

Provide a short explanation of the design principle of the lens and how it ties into which motivations.

Insert an illustration from one example

Provide a short explanation of the example we see in the illustration.

Focusing questions

  • Provide a list of questions that establish?
  • What are the relevant elements this design principle pertains to?
  • What are ideal or problematic states of these elements or their relations with regard to the desired motivational effects?
  • How might one go about optimising them and/or their relations?

Can be instantiated by

Name the sub-patterns and sub-lenses that are more concrete instantiations or examples of this one.

Examples

Example name 1

Insert an illustration

Provide a short explanation of the example we see in the illustration.

Example name 2-n

Insert an illustration

Provide a short explanation of the example we see in the illustration.

Considerations

Explain things and caveats to think about when using this pattern.

Headlines

Use headlines to call out each main consideration point.

Tool

If possible, provide a little exemplary worksheet, diagram, or similar together with instructions that a designer can work with to put the focusing questions of your lens into practice.

Metrics

Name and link main metrics that can be used to capture the effectiveness of the used lens (e.g. the PENS player experience of need satisfaction competence sub-scale for measuring competence).

Validity

A lens can be either speculative (it is a new pattern you came up with) or industry standard (it is widely used across the game industry) and/or empirically validated (there are empirical studies demonstrating the effect of the pattern).

Categories

List the motivations and components this pattern belongs to.

References

List of scholarly and professional sources and references that serve as background or support to this pattern. Please reference using the APA citation style.

Authors

Name the authors who wrote this pattern in order of contribution. Make an author page for yourself linked from the list of contributors.
